The Chief Election Commissioner has no moral or constitutional right to remain in office; he must resign from his post with immediate effect. -- All India Peoples' Front

• The issue of the credibility of the voter list and electoral database is extremely grave; SIR must be stayed with immediate effect.

Lucknow, September 24, 2026,

The Indian Express reports make it clear that serious objections have been raised within the Election Commission itself regarding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list, Form 6, and related electoral procedures. If two other members of the Election Commission have recorded objections regarding the removal of names from the voter list and related processes, it underlines the gravity of the entire matter. The kind of attack seen on the voting rights of citizens is unforgivable. Therefore, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar has no moral or constitutional right to remain in his post and should resign from his position with immediate effect. This demand has been made by the National Executive Committee of the All India Peoples' Front.

The Front stated that having one's name on the voter list is a fundamental prerequisite of a citizen's democratic and constitutional rights. No eligible citizen can be deprived of their right to vote through an opaque, arbitrary, or legally baseless process. In particular, an independent investigation is necessary into the changes made in Form 6, which lack a clear legal basis and the failure to provide Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) adequate access to necessary voter list data. Processes such as removing names of citizens from the voter list in large numbers can only be conducted through a transparent, lawful, and verifiable procedure.

This entire debacle cannot be viewed in isolation from the question of the Election Commission's institutional independence. In 2023, significant changes were made to the composition of the selection committee under the law governing the appointment of Election Commissioners, removing the Chief Justice of India from the selection committee and replacing them with a Union Minister nominated by the Prime Minister. In light of the current questions being raised about the independence of the Election Commission, a serious discussion on this statutory change is also necessary in Parliament.

The All India Peoples Front has demanded that:

1. The Chief Election Commissioner resign from his post with immediate effect.

2. The SIR process be stayed immediately.

3. An independent and impartial probe be conducted into the removal of names from the voter list through SIR and the alleged irregular changes made in Form 6.

4. All objections, note-sheets, and related documents recorded within the Election Commission in this regard be made public.

5. An independent review be conducted into the cases of all eligible citizens whose names were removed from the voter list during SIR to protect their franchise.

6. Necessary access to the voter list and related records be ensured for Electoral Registration Officers (EROs).

7. A legal and administrative audit of all changes made in Form 6 and the voter list be conducted.

8. An immediate and comprehensive discussion be held in Parliament on the appointment of Election Commissioners and the institutional independence of the Election Commission, accompanied by necessary constitutional and legal reforms.
